I asked my mom and she said pretty much every house had a telephone even when she was little. They did have a party line rather than a dedicated line though.

We had two phone booths in town.
And I reckon no more than 20 people had a phone.
People would get important messages left at these houses.
Often you were the first to hear about other people’s new babies, deaths and accidents.
