The U.S. has overtaken Japan in crude steel production for the first time in 26 years in 2025, positioning itself as the world’s third-largest steel producer, trailing behind China and India.

According to the World Steel Association (WSA), the United States produced 82.0 million tons of steel in 2025, marking a 3.1% increase from the previous year. This milestone marks the first instance in 26 years that U.S. steel production has surpassed that of Japan, Nikkei Asia reported.

The growth in U.S. steel production was largely fueled by the demand for AI data center and power plant construction, as well as President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
