how are you defining "life"?

This is and has for as long as I can remember (grade school science class) been the definition:

It is defined descriptively by the capacity for homeostasis, organisation, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction.

Silicon based life would probably be pretty intelligent as well, though might not be if it was natural.  My theory is that all silicon based life was engineered by preexisting life, though, and not natural in the normally understood sense of the word.

Again, that is what the science books have been saying at least since the 1970s.  Wikipedia will footnote where they got that from if you want to know more.
