NBC News Trump unveils plans for a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa 3 hours ago By Garrett Haake & Rebecca Shabad

That's a lot of coin for a 200 year old technology (for the modern coking type, longer for older types).  Assuming it is a blast furnace.

JFK announced the goal of the moon in 1961 and it didn't happen until 1969.

Trump is greater than JFK!

Wow.  I guess he actually sort of did something positive to help workers.  Good to see.  Much better than removing polling places, taking food away from kids, making students pay more to go to college, etc.

I think for strategic reasons we need the steel capacity.

Pure economic theory says we do not if we can buy it more cheaply elsewhere, but that ignores the consequences of warfare and great power competition.  This is the reason we need rare earths too.  China doesn't give a fuq about economic theory and won't sell them to us at market rates or any rates whenever they want to use it as coercion.  Economic theory goes all to hell under many circumstances like this.

facepalm

Iowa has no iron ore, no coking coal and no ship transport.  There is a reason the big U.S. steel mills are located ON the Great Lakes.  Transport costs will make this the least cost competitive plant on earth.

But the GDP!

How can you ignore the GDP?  I endorsed slavery and organ farms because of the GDP.

I’ve explained over and over to this board that economics is not a science.

You won’t get a steel plant, you’ll get another IT body shop.

If this plant is brought to life, they won’t be hiring Americans.  They’ll import cheap labor the owners can abuse.

Why won’t they be able to abuse American workers?  You think union-busting Republicans are going to stop them?  Or maybe the Epstein class will suddenly come out for workers rights?

Iowa has no iron ore, no coking coal and no ship transport.  There is a reason the big U.S. steel mills are located ON the Great Lakes.  Transport costs will make this the least cost competitive plant on earth.

No coal required, the plant will use an EAF.

Ore pellets will be transported from MN via BNSF.

If this plant is brought to life, they won’t be hiring Americans.  They’ll import cheap labor the owners can abuse.

They already have an agreement with all the unions.

Here is the real problem,. What Trump announced isn't that the plant will be built, but that it will be paid for by the US taxpayer.

In other words, the company couldn't find private financing for it, so they went to the US government for help.

DEI for....

whitetrash    cletus        doublewide

It was already established that this is an industry not suitable for America anymore

It is cheap to import than to produce

My take is it will never be built. The three characters above better start learning how to utilize AI

If they are literate enough...

Still pricey.  The Mesabi range produced taconite which is only 60 or so % iron, not pure enough for an electric arc furnace.  So they’ll have to ship all that taconite by rail (expensive) and then convert it to direct reduced iron (90% pure) using natural gas sourced from Canada (expensive).

And the electric arc furnace will require a new power plant, probably also Canadian natural gas powered (expensive).

Rail is expensive compared to shipping, That’s why the large steel mills were built along the Great Lakes.  Cheap bulk freight, easy access to raw materials.

Re: NBC News Trump unveils plans for a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa 3 hours ago By Garrett Haake & Rebecca Shabad

Let’s be honest about this shyt… if there were actually private capital willing to risk their own money I’d say go right ahead but that’s not what this is.  At best it’ll be a taxpayer funded pork barrel scam and most likely it’s just another empty vote-buying promise like the DOGE dividends, the tariff rebates or the $5,000 checks.
