They had already let the MAGA media know they were going to prove Jack Smith was secretly in Atlanta and that he might perjure himself. They would twist that into conspiring with Fani Willis, and how that was obviously a crime against Donald Trump. Schmitt had also queued up favorable commentary for Schmitt, to talk up his friendship with JD Vance, and claim that his performance in that hearing made him the front-runner for 2028 VP candidate.
And then the Democrats and Jack Smith questioned Schmitt's version of events. People found video showing Smith attending a Hawkeyes game in Maryland, not a Hawks game in Atlanta. And it all collapsed.

Schmitt told the other Republican senators that he was going to nail Jack Smith's balls to the floor, connecting Smith to Atlanta and thereby Fani Willis. Their job was to be outraged and make a lot of noise about crime and conspiracy, in their follow-ups.
