In 2005 there were no cheap 3D printers so there was no real incentive for me. I don't have easy access to a CNC router or lathe nor the skill to use them effectively. I'd probably cut off a finger.

I'm not sure how many years i've been using it, double digits, but good luck on that 1 year!
I would suggest using onshape or fusion 360 to start. They're much cheaper, or even free at certain levels, and they're pretty similar which would make learning solidworks easier.
Solidworks is incredibly frustrating at times, so be prepared. That said it's also incredibly useful.
