And I'm sure a lot of people will. The problem is that the cities hosting the games have spent a lot of money on getting things set up and they were relying on tourist revenue to offset that. If people stay at home (or attend matches in Canada or Mexico instead of the US) then that won't happen and the host cities will end up with another big number in brackets on their balance sheet.

I suspect that the only people that will make money out of this are FIFA, since they are handling all the ticket sales and have managed to transfer all the costs to the host cities.

Most big sports events have overall pretty negative economics, but I suspect this one is going to be a lot worse than usual.

They're hosting 6 matches here.   In June & July.

There's a World Cup sign with the 6 game schedule inside the airport.  There may be another sign along the airport's access road.

There have been a couple of segments on the TV news, regarding Airbnb pricing during those 6 matches, suggesting you could make money renting out your home.  There isn't a lot of Airbnb need here.

This is the second time FIFA has brought The World Cup circus to the US.  FIFA should know better, since there's no local interest.
