Eldercare has become far more difficult because adult children are now more likely to be spread out around the world.
For 200,000 years, when people grew old, their adult children were nearby, so it was easy to take care of the elderly.
But in modern times, it has become almost normalized for adult children to move far away from home, sometimes for college, sometimes after college. When we're in our 20s, we are quick to jump at job opportunities & adventure on the other side of the country, or on the other side of the world.
By the time the parents are 80+ years old, in failing health, their adult children are often 1,000+ miles away, with full-time jobs & maybe kids of their own.
Moving the elderly closer to their adult kids can be difficult, because the elderly are often too frail to move, or unwilling to move away from a place they spent their entire life in.
As a result, many Gen-Xers I know are dealing with insane eldercare situations, trying to take care of far-away elderly parents.

I kept a house near my parents and spent a lot of time with them in their final years. I probably don't do enough, but I try.
My work has taken me all over.
