VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —

Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced Monday that license plate readers will be shut down effective immediately in Volusia County.

"This is not a decision I take lightly," Chitwood said.

This decision comes after controversy surrounding Flock cameras and who has access to the data they collect, along with how it is stored.

"License plate readers have helped us solve violent crimes, saved lives, found missing people, and recovered stolen property," Chitwood said. "However, recent orders and statements from our governor and Department of Transportation have made it clear that license plate readers are no longer workable in Florida."

Edgewater Mayor Diezel DePew supports the decision, announcing the city will no longer be using Flock cameras.

"I believe this is a step in the right direction for protecting the privacy and constitutional rights of our residents," DePew said. "After hearing concerns from our constituents, we are listening. As we explore other public safety solutions for areas such as our parks, protecting both public safety and individual privacy must remain a priority."
