Albuquerque, New Mexico — On August 11, 2026 around 1:24 a.m., Albuquerque Police received a 911 call from 39-year-old Sean Omara, claiming a homeless man was repeatedly trying to get into his apartment. Officers responded but found no evidence of an intruder. Hours later, Omara called again, this time reporting that people were using small drones to gain access to his home and describing images he believed were appearing inside. Officers again found nothing suspicious. They spoke with him about his safety but Omara told officers he was safe. Police said they did not have legal grounds at that point to take him to a hospital or seize his firearms because he had not threatened himself or anyone else. The situation changed shortly after noon when Omara’s sister contacted 911 from out of state and reported that he was experiencing hallucinations and had access to firearms. Minutes later, Omara called 911 again, and dispatchers could hear repeated gunfire and him shouting about intruders. Officers evacuated nearby residents and spent hours attempting to communicate with him by phone, loudspeaker and other methods while SWAT prepared for a prolonged standoff. Police said Omara fired dozens more rounds from inside the apartment later that afternoon, with investigators eventually recovering 117 spent casings and three firearms. SWAT deployed chemical munitions and used other equipment in an effort to bring the situation to an end. At one point, Omara stepped onto his balcony wearing a tactical vest but without a weapon before returning inside. He later emerged again carrying a rifle. Two SWAT officers fired four rounds, killing Omara. The officers were initially placed on leave but have since returned to duty while the investigation into the shooting continues.
