If you are White and you didnt recall ordering anything, you would most likely tell them to keep the item.
This would be a normal, civil thing to do since you dont want an unearned item anyway.

The paper trail would end with you.
You would be the responsible person, especially if they recorded you acknowledging the item.

They would get an item that was bought with a stolen credit card and you would be the patsy.

UPDATE: I drove 45+ minutes both ways this morning out to the middle of nowhere to see what this mystery package was all about, with the property owner offering to leave it on a porch. I arrived at a beautiful antebellum mantion on the river :wtf:

Yes, there was a package for me on the porch, and god fuqing dammit it WAS something I was missing.
Not from USPS or UPS or FedEx - it was from FUQING IKEA and was a box of hinges I had ordered with PAX wardrobes. All other pieces had been delivered to my doorstep, contractor assembled in place, but the important door hinges were missing. I was accused of not ordering them (I did) or losing them somewhere in this renovation hell full of delivery boxes. The project could not be completed. All because some incompetent IKEA subcontractor driver with a certain accent couldn’t bother to deliver my complete order & decided to toss my hinges on a mantion porch 30 minutes away.

The mantion owner was not required to find me, or invite me to the mantion far away. I spent the weekend thinking it was a Nigerian scam and said my goodbyes.

Yes the hinges were very much missed, and I had reordered them to be picked up tomorrow along with a humongous order of more wardrobes. Hired a big truck to drive FAR to an IKEA to pick up because I can’t trust their home delivery service to get the order right at all.

The missing parts had already been reordered from IKEA, they were a small part (hardware) of a larger order they got mostly correct. It was a test order to see how cheesy the item is. Now I’ve ordered 5 more but had to hire a large truck & driver to physically go to IKEA far away and pick up the order, since they cannot be depended on to deliver an order correctly.

Yes I thought about asking for a photo to prove she wasn’t lying, but that’s quite a cheeky demand to someone who found my shyt & had no obligation to find me over it.

It turns out she was being the Good Samaritan here, and also she was doing something incredibly stupid: she gave a perfect stranger (me) her address to her rural , telling me nobody would be there for days. That’s IMHO INCREDIBLY stupid, no driveway security gates.

If I ever got a faraway stranger’s package or mail that shyt would be given back to whatever delivery service, or thrown in the trash, no exceptions.

I seriously could not figure out the scam, and I am not an easy person to contact for a cold call like that. Unlike most people I have social media etc bolted the fuq down to be unreachable. So the idea that some woman 45 min away contacted me, having only my real name & real address, was suspect.

And yes she has a mantion on the waterfront with a very strange yet historic roof form. And since this person had my real name and actual address, I suppose she was able to look up in the state tax records and see my own mantion.

I don’t suppose she & I will ever cross paths again, unless I were to offer to buy her a coffee to thank her for reuniting me with a box of IKEA hinges, but nope.
