A friend of mine is a lawyer. He is pulling in a decent salary, but he bought a giant shytbox mcmansion and has a wife doesn't work and spends her way into massive credit card debt. Despite all his cash, they are barely getting by.

ImperialExecutiveYes, I do, and the common denominator is:
PUTTING THEIR KIDS IN PRIVATE OR SUBURBAN SCHOOLS IN ORDER TO AVOID BLACKS
That expense alone is the cause of much of their ills.

The Two Income trap! Even if a couple are both employed in high-paying professions, they blow all that money on moving out the "good" school districts, buying an overpriced home, and buying all the furniture and shyt that go with suburban life. All that just to make sure little Connor or Madison get decent schools.

I used to make a great living. Never having had money before, I spent it on whatever I wanted - cigars, expensive meals, scotch. If I wanted something I bought it.
Since I owned my own business, anything I could justify as a business expense was also a tax writeoff. I'd often wait until December to see what my tax bill would be, then make a multi thousand dollar business purchase to offset it.
That all came to a crashing halt in '05, the almost forgotten Bush Blip - when the first wave of business mortgages reset and defaulted, and I lost 90% of my client base. There were a couple years there where I was actually under the standard deduction going in...
I don't regret any of it, but I sure as fuq would like to get back there. I'd probably do a lot of saving this time.

Private Schools at $20-30k a year per kid will quickly bankrupt you. If you schools are that fuqing bad, MOVE. It will be a lot cheaper in the long run.
Having the wife at home not working is another expense. This gives her time to spend money and think about things to spend money on.

Have your stay at home wife homeschool. This occupies her time and saves a fortune.

Poor GuyI used to make a decent living. When my job ended, I did cut my expenses to an extent.
When my unemployment ended, I realized that the job that I thought was just around the corner (I've never, ever had difficulty finding work before) still hadn't materialized and my spending came to a complete halt.
I'm afraid I'll be on the streets this winter.

Do you know people who make good money but burn through every dime of it?
Isn't that most people?
I'm the opposite. I haven't worked in years, but I pinch pennies to afford myself the luxury of living life following my whims.
The way I live, if I worked more I'd be wealthy.
But, I prefer a life of leisure.
JELLUS?

LichenYes. I know a local contractor who makes good money - but, his vehicle is always on the fritz, and he has to take out loans to keep it on the road.
No vehicle, no business - and he can't afford to buy a new one.
That being said, he has a giant house in the country, with all the amenities. hot tub, stacked bar, you name it, they have it.
