My new laptop is cool, except for Linux

If you're using Arch, you have quite a tolerance for pain & misery.

In my experience it is by far the easiest distro.  At least for me.  But I guess you kind of have to know what you are doing (you basically make your own custom install).  It has been many years since I had any severe breakage-- to the point where I can barely remember how to chroot now.

I remember someone here (StudSupreme?) complaining about the install process many years ago.  That month I had just so happened to reinstall on one of my systems and I remembered that I actually had a working custom install done in about 15 minutes (before the utilities to make it easier existed).  Meanwhile he was claiming it took him over two days before he just gave up (or something like this).  I was incredulous.  This isn't a humblebrag or anything.  I'm not saying I am a supergenius or a Linux god but what I am saying is a little bit of knowledge and experience goes a long way in Arch Linux.  You get what you put into it basically.

You’ll spend more than $130 of your time trying to make it work.
Is it worth it?

But he's gaining experience by powering through and making it work.  Assuming it can be done.  Probably just needs a BIOS update then assuming they fixed it?

I have an Apple M1.  Linux installations on ARM can be...  questionable.

I have Arch installed within a VMware image.  I found that linux version 6.7.8 becomes linux version 6.8.7 when you attempt to update.  Clearly, a scripting problem.

Since this version of Arch isn't mainstream, who do you bitch at?  Easier to punt to Fedora, which supports ARM.

This will change when Snapdragon X launches & those smelly Linux nerds can get to work with their new hardware.

His laptop will take 2 nVme sticks.  One has to be the shorter variant, used on the Surface.

1 - get it to work
2 - fix it later

They will fix the bug.

You know how to install an unencrypted distro, since you may be waiting a bit.
