Back then when this kid was born, it was a popular (and very successful) fertility treatment option they used a lot before going to IVF (IVF was very difficult + not often successful back then). They relied on IUIs, pretty much overpriced inseminations, where the man jacks off in a cup & the clinic delivers the spunk directly into the uterus with a glorified straw. This head start can overcome some “simple” problems, like the woman’s cervix being hostile, or the man’s spunk being slow or weak or malformed. These inseminations are very easy for the clinic, big money makers/staff can do them, need to be repeated over & over $$$$ until the woman gets pregnant eventually or switches to IVF.
BUT - this happened a lot - sometimes after a few IUI failures the fertility Dr offered to give the sperm a booster, and the parents to be agreed. It was sold to them as mixing some healthy sperm in with the spunk - “just a tiny bit” - to enhance the slow sperm & make it more successful. The drs told the patients that they were only adding a tiny bit of extra sperm, that the overwhelming majority would be the male’s own slow/deformed swimmers, and (lied) that the resulting pregnancy was 95% from the slow spunk getting a lil help. It was also implied that there would never be a way to know for sure so for just STFU and raise the baby as your own, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
The drs either pretended it was a legit move to improving success, or (even worse) they just mixed in some good sperm without telling the parents, knowing they will be thrilled with a pregnancy & parents don’t have to know. They NEVER EVER told the expectant father who was paying the fertility treatment bills that his sperm was most likely shyt because he was old or obese or alcoholic. 
I have a nephew who obviously was the result of IUI in a clinic (the parents brag about it) but they don’t mention the helper sperm or pretend they didn’t know.

Before anyone says this is far fetched or never happened, the internet is full of people now getting DNA tests & finding out dad isn’t really dad, despite the couple having “fertility treatments” in the 80s. When they confront the parents they act dumb OR fess up about the “helper” sperm & swear they had no idea.

Lots of kids. It was the best way for a clinic to get an IUI to work after a few failures, everybody was happy.

Yes but some women really do have good eggs left at that age. After 40? Little chance. But an older female patient combined with her fat cat famous older husband with lots of money? It’s bad PR to tell the big blowhard that his sperm is shyt. Men are told they have fine sperm until death, which just isn’t true. The “helper sperm” theory was easily accepted when they were just tired of the fertility treatments, drama, drugs, etc, and it solved a lot of problems easily. Made clinic look good/competent, clients happy, recommended to friends, no more heartbreak of failed inseminations or worse, no future failed IVFs needed.
