There have been a couple of segments on the TV news, regarding Airbnb pricing during those 6 matches, suggesting you could make money renting out your home.  There isn't a lot of Airbnb need here.

This is the second time FIFA has brought The World Cup circus to the US.  FIFA should know better, since there's no local interest.

The biggest direct costs for host cities are transportation and security - it varies, but they are typically in the $100M-200M range. In this case, "transportation" also include shyt like (1st class) flight tickets for the FIFA officials and their bloated entourage.  The host agreement also reserves some of the most lucrative stuff (like some classes of sponsorship like F&B and ticket resales) to FIFA and bans the cities from doing it themselves.

They are also prohibited by the same agreement from charging sales tax on the tickets - so basically the only way they have of making their costs back is by betting on tourist revenue.  This is the same scam a lot of sports franchises use - but in this case it's worse than normal because there is so little organic interest in soccer in the US.

So I wouldn't worry about FIFA making money - they have carefully engineered things so that even if the matches are a fuqing disaster they still will. For the cities, it's a much risker proposition because the only thing they can reliably collect is extra revenue from tourism.
