This June, LA County will vote to add another .5% to its base sales tax rate (9.75%). If it passes, most cities in LA County will have a sales tax above 11%!
Some cities (each city in LA County has its own sales tax on top of the County base tax) will have a sales tax as high as 11.25%, and Lancaster and Palmdale will have a sales tax of 11.75% - that's closing in on European VAT rates or Canadian provincial rates!

The highest income bracket in Cali is 13.3% (12.3% for all income over $730k, and a 1% millionaire's tax), and it makes no distinction between W-2 and 1099 income.
Between income, sales tax, and property taxes, I bet top earners in California are paying >25% to the State! And remember: Sales tax dollars are twice-taxed (once on income and once on the purchase).
