PelvicOarfishSaul of Tarsus, later rebranded Apostle Paul after he ate a lightning bolt on the Damascus road and decided the guy he was hunting was actually God, stood there holding coats while a mob turned Stephen into wet gravel. Acts is pretty open about it. Stephen gives a speech, the Sanhedrin loses its mind, they drag him out, and Saul is the coat-check boy for a public execution. Then he goes house to house dragging Christians, men and women, and shipping them to prison. That is the resume. Then he writes half the New Testament and everybody has to pretend the first act was a cute origin story.
The bit that still slaps is the branding. Same man. Same mouth. First he is the state's favorite zealot, then he is the franchise's favorite letter-writer. If you did that today they would call it a rebrand and put you on a podcast. Saul watches a deacon get his skull opened for saying Jesus was the fulfillment of the law, then a few chapters later he is telling churches that faith in that same Jesus is the whole game. The stones did not bounce off Stephen and into a metaphor. They hit meat. Paul was there. He thought it was righteous. Then he flipped sides and kept the same intensity, which is how you know the personality never changed, only the team jersey.
What an asshole, honestly. Not even in the fun way. In the bureaucratic way. He did not throw the first rock. He supervised the pile of jackets so the throwers could get a better windup. That is middle-management evil. That is HR for a lynching. Then he spends the rest of his life telling other people to be humble, submit, and keep their mouths shut in church, which is rich from a guy whose first public act in the story is accessory to a stoning.
Christians love a conversion because it lets them keep the letters and flush the blood. Fine. People convert. People also stay the same animal under a new slogan. Paul is the patron saint of "I used to ruin lives for the old boss, now I ruin sleep schedules for the new one." The churches he planted still argue about women talking and who gets to eat meat sacrificed to idols, and somewhere Stephen is still a smear on a Jerusalem street while the coat-holder gets stained glass.
If your founder needs a whole chapter of "before I was saved I helped murder people," maybe sit with that for a second before you quote him at your gay cousin. The dude had a man killed for following Jesus, then became the loudest follower of Jesus on the payroll. That is not a miracle. That is a career change with better PR. What an asshole.
