I like the functionality that the current implementation provides.  But I guess you could do things such as add autocomplete to "search by author" (should be pretty trivial and would modernize it).  And maybe just default to "simple search" but have an option to individually expand to see details for an individual result and ideally also have some sort of option to "expand all" either on just that page or ALL  results.  Just some ideas.
