What virologists do, a simple primer

The "lab leak" idiots seem to both loathe virologists and assign them powers they just don't have.

Virology is civilian. Its about understanding how viruses work and how they spread. This is what
we need to know to develop new drugs and vaccines.

Its really complex chemically to understand how they enter cells and how they coopt different
reproductive mechanisms.

Different families of viruses have different mechanisms, some incredibly complex.

One way to study viruses is to change their DNA. Different types of viruses have differing technologies
to change it. One thing we cannot do though is accurately predict which DNA (or RNA for some) will
produce what change. That is why the whole "oh they just developed" Covid thing falls apart. The
first problem is that no lab technique exists for replacing any arbitrary gene at a given location for
a Coronavirus. You can splice sections of DNA together sometimes in some locations.

Then you need to replicate a virus. This requires a host (an animal model). So now you need all the
research issues that involve animals, and you need to be able to figure out where the virus is and
how to extract it.

Virologists are also in the business of attracting grant money, and to do that they must publish their
research goals and methods and their results. Most publications also demand unredacted research data
which includes DNA / RNA sequences.

This is important because "the Chinese are lying" or "the Chinese didn't disclose dangerous experiments"
are central to the lab leaker's conspiracies. The Chinese need grants, and to get the international funding
they must publish. And they did.

So why did USA fund coronavirus gain-of-function research in the Wuhan lab, via Anthony Fauci / NiH / Peter Daszak / EcoHealth Alliance?

@Phil, please submit a community note to address the bagger in reply#2:

Funding surveillance of naturally occurring bat coronaviruses to prevent future outbreaks isn't the same as engineering a pandemic. The bat viruses studied under that grant are genetically distinct from SARS-CoV-2.

Surveillance?

NiH already admitted that the research had the “unexpected result” of creating a coronavirus that was more infectious in mice.

This was not simply "surveillance".

NIH says grantee failed to report experiment in Wuhan that created a bat virus that made mice sicker

EcoHealth Alliance violated terms of grant, according to letter to House Republicans

21 Oct 2021

An ongoing controversy over what constitutes virology research that is too dangerous to conduct—and whether the U.S government funded studies in China that violated a policy barring funding for such risky research—has taken a new turn. While denying once again it had helped create the virus that sparked the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed in a letter sent yesterday to Republicans in Congress that experiments it funded through a U.S.-based nonprofit in 2018 and 2019 at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China had the “unexpected result” of creating a coronavirus that was more infectious in mice.

My AI just bitchslapped you again

That 2021 NIH letter is a smoking gun for EcoHealth breaking grant terms and failing to report a 1-log growth jump in humanized mice. But in terms of COVID's origin, the chimeric backbone used in that specific study was WIV1—a virus genetically incapable of evolving into SARS-CoV-2. Valid critique of NIH oversight, but bad evidence for a lab origin.

Your AI is retarded. lol

I never claimed that Covid-19 came from a lab.

I simply asked "why did USA fund coronavirus gain-of-function research in the Wuhan lab, via Anthony Fauci / NiH / Peter Daszak / EcoHealth Alliance?"

It's funny that your jew bot immediately tried to attack claims that Covid-19 came from a lab, WHEN I NEVER MADE THAT CLAIM.

Its in the US national interest to find out about emerging threats to human health all over the world.

So, research is funded.

You're leaving out the fact that EcoHealth Alliance violated terms of their grant, used taxpayer cash to fund gain-of-function coronavirus research at the Wuhan lab, and hid evidence of their activities.

EcoHealth Alliance faces criminal DOJ probe after funding risky Wuhan lab research with taxpayer cash, House report finds

29 July 2026

The US Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the pandemic-era activities of the EcoHealth Alliance, following new congressional findings that the organisation used taxpayer cash to fund gain-of-function research at a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

A comprehensive report from the House Select Subcommittee details how the nonprofit group allegedly violated federal grant terms before facing suspension from all government funding, according to the subcommittee's findings.

Lawmakers claim EcoHealth President Dr Peter Daszak attempted to obstruct the federal inquiry by altering documents, instructing staff to reduce the pace of evidence production, and providing false statements to Congress regarding the organisation's collaborative work overseas.

The US Department of Health and Human Services initiated official debarment proceedings against the group. Authorities suspended financial support after evidence emerged that the organisation had violated the terms of its National Institutes of Health grant, the report states.

Not what happened, and, as others have pointed out, cannot have led to the evolution of Covid.

Devil's advocate here, but considering the rate of covid19 spread, which seemed accelerated, how did ebola not also spread the same way?

Gain of function testing, near wet markets, in case of 'issues'.

Ebola is not airborne.

Covid is.

It's perfectly safe, seal the hatch.

Re: What virologists do, a simple primer

After the wet market was closed, samples showed the animals in the wet market were infected with two
different strains of SARS-CoV2, both of which crossed to humans.

Further testing showed that after the virus jumped into humans, it went through selection to stabilize it,
which is consistent with the virus in the animal having the capacity to infect humans.

So the most probable is that a market wild animal vendor transported infected animals to the market. They first infected
other nearby animals, and then one or two people in late November. The first few people probably didn't show symptoms, and
then a small reservoir around the market took hold. In early Dec, the virus found the first humans that were vulnerable to
the sickness, and by then is was too late.
