VP_Spiro_T_CheneyNeocloud stocks entered a tailspin on Wednesday after a report by Gartner predicted 80% of neoclouds will cease independent operations by 2030 if AI infrastructure spending continues at its breakneck speed.
CoreWeave (CRWV) led the collapse, with shares crumbling 15% by noon trading, while Digital Ocean (DOCN) receded 14%. Hut 8 (HUT) plunged 10%. Nebius (NBIS) and IREN (IREN) sank 9%, while Cipher Digital (CIFR) and Applied Digital (APLD) careened down 8.7%
"In 2026, AI providers are expected to spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure, and are forecast to invest an additional $6 trillion between 2027 and 2030," said Will Sommer, senior director analyst at Gartner on Wednesday. "However, our research indicates that enterprise and consumer AI revenue will be insufficient to support profitable returns on all planned AI capital expenditures during this period."
The analysis contends that AI data center owners need to generate a cumulative $8.5T in revenue by 2030 to cover announced capital spending, financing costs, and a 12% return on invested capital, which Gartner assumed as the hurdle rate of investment capital. Unfortunately, AI revenue related to data centers is only forecast to reach $3.6T by 2030.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch... of bag holders.

Dario & Slimy Sam don't have $8.50, never mind 8+ trillion. How do you generate 8.5 trillion for a commoditized product?

1 trillion spend? In circular financing with Jensen + other shysters like Larry Ellison?

That’s why they’re looking for “government partnership” and also pushing so hard to get insurance companies to invest in data center bonds… and when an insurer goes bust the sad sack taxpayer is the bagholder of last resort.
Privatize the gains, socialize the costs.

That's not true. They have re-insurance first.

I do think a lot of this bad debt is going to come due pretty soon especially as interest rates continue to go up. How much do you figure is at risk I figure about 1.5-2 trillion in bad debt. A crushing blow to be sure but not something that will break the economy.

There's another problem: As local models improve, do we need all these data centers?

Nope. Computers have always been a terrible investment. You spend for 6 moths or a year.
At 3 years your value is about 10%.

How long are nVidia chips going to last at 24/7 x 365 usage?

TechStockTonySo it will be a slow, agonizing downward grind for the Nasdaq just like Oct 2000, which proceeded to decline 70% until the bottom in early 2003.
